Frequently Asked Questions
What are FSA and HSA accounts?
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are financial programs that allow you to set aside pre-tax income to pay for qualifying healthcare expenses. If you're uncertain whether you have an HSA or FSA, please consult your employer or insurance provider.
How do FSA/HSA account work?
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) allow you to use pre-tax income to cover expenses aimed at treating, mitigating, or preventing a diagnosed medical condition. If you're unsure whether a purchase qualifies under your HSA/FSA plan, your plan administrator may require a "Letter of Medical Necessity" from a licensed healthcare provider. Truemed facilitates connections with licensed providers to obtain this letter.
When a licensed provider determines that a product or service can help treat, mitigate, or prevent your diagnosed medical condition, they will issue a Letter of Medical Necessity. With this letter in hand, you can request reimbursement for the product or service from your HSA/FSA plan administrator. Please note that Letters of Medical Necessity are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

How does using your FSA/HSA funds help you to save money?
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) were designed to let you allocate pre-tax income toward expenses that treat, mitigate, or prevent diagnosed medical conditions. By using pre-tax funds, these accounts enhance your purchasing power, allowing you to get more value for your money. Instead of paying taxes on your earnings before spending on health-related items, eligible individuals can invest directly in their well-being with untaxed dollars.
For HSAs, individuals can contribute up to $3,850 per year before taxes, or $7,750 for families. If you're at least 55 years old, you can contribute an additional $1,000. FSAs allow individuals to set aside up to $3,050 per year in pre-tax dollars, with an extra $500 in employer contributions permitted. Depending on your state and tax bracket, most eligible individuals can save between $1,000 and $2,000 annually.
What is a Letter of Medical Necessity?
To determine whether certain products or services are eligible expenses for treating, mitigating, or preventing a diagnosed medical condition, HSA/FSA plan administrators often require documentation from a licensed healthcare practitioner. This documentation is called a "Letter of Medical Necessity."
